What is the Genesafe Complete test?
Available from 10 weeks into pregnancy (calculated from the first day of your last period), this non-invasive blood test offers an advanced look at your baby’s health — using a simple blood sample from the mother.
From around 5 weeks of pregnancy, small fragments of your baby’s DNA begin circulating in your bloodstream. By 10 weeks, there’s enough present to allow accurate, high-specificity testing — giving you the clarity and confidence you need at this early stage.
This test offers a deeper look than standard screening. It combines insights into both inherited and de novo (new, non-inherited) mutations — offering a more complete picture of your baby’s genetic risk.
It screens for 44 serious genetic conditions linked to new mutations across 25 key genes, without increasing risk to you or your baby.
A reassurance scan is also included, giving you both vital insight and peace of mind.
Who it's for
Parents who are known carriers or have a family history of the genetic conditions included in the screen
Parents who want to check for conditions that can occur spontaneously in the baby (not inherited)
Families where the father is over 40, as advanced paternal age can increase the likelihood of new mutations
Parents who have received abnormal ultrasound findings that may suggest a single-gene (monogenic) disorder
Anyone looking to gain deeper reassurance without opting for invasive diagnostic procedures
This test provides meaningful insight for those seeking clarity and confidence, with no added risk to your pregnancy.
What happens
This appointment begins with an early pregnancy scan, just like our standalone EP service, offering a moment of calm and connection before we move into the testing stage.
Our sonographers are also trained and experienced in venepuncture, so once we’ve confirmed your preferences, they’ll take a small blood sample (usually from your arm, sometimes from your hand). We aim to make this quick, calm and as comfortable as possible.
You’ll be asked whether you’d like your baby’s gender to be included in your results, and we’ll guide you through a short consent form so the lab can begin processing your sample.
Before you leave, your sonographer will provide you with printed scan images and send the digital version (photos and video) straight to your phone.
Preparation
There’s nothing specific you need to do to prepare for this appointment, just come as you are.
If you already know whether you'd like the standard or advanced test, and whether you'd like to know your baby’s gender, that’s helpful, but there's no rush. We’ll talk everything through with you on the day so you feel fully informed before giving consent.
As always, you're welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member with you for support.
On the day
Have a good breakfast, stay well hydrated, and aim for a comfortably full bladder. We recommend emptying your bladder before leaving home, then sipping water (around 500ml max) up to the time of your appointment, no need to overdo it.
Being well-fed, warm, and hydrated also helps make the blood draw smoother, so wrap up, drink up, and don’t arrive on an empty stomach.
If your appointment is between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, head to Main Reception at Greetwell Place. The team there will let us know you’ve arrived.
If you’re visiting outside of these hours, follow the road through the car park to the right of the building, past the 5mph sign. Park near the ScanLinc sandwich board sign, this is our private entrance. Please note, there’s no access to the building before your appointment time when reception is closed.
We kindly ask that you wait in your vehicle or nearby at a respectful distance until we come to greet you. Not everyone is open about their pregnancy, and not everyone is having a joyful scan, your sensitivity makes a difference.
